Do You Have Defective Shingles Protecting Your Home?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2016 by Mitch Husnik

Home with Defective Shingles Home built in 2005 with defective shingles.

What constitutes a defective shingle?  Excessive granular loss, cracking and loss of color match are all reasons why defective shingles were discovered.  There is a good chance if your shingles were installed between 1997-2006, you run the risk and could have defective shingles installed on your home.  There were multiple styles of defective shingles that were manufactured and installed during those years.  The most common style of defective shingles commonly replaced today are 3-tab and a granule layover architectural.

It’s important to have your roof inspected right away if you suspect defective shingles were installed.  Many times manufactures will only provide a pro-rated remaining life of the value of the shingles at the time the file is claimed.  The longer a homeowner waits, the less amount of money they could receive to replace their roof.  Unfortunately, no labor, debris removal or permit costs can be recovered.

If you suspect defective shingles could be installed, contact a licensed roofing contractor.  They will be able to help inspect your shingles and offer recommendations.  If you live within the Twin Cities Metro area of MN, please call us at Roof Time, Inc.  We will perform a complete roof inspection to help determine if your shingles are defective.  We are the experts that have helped many homeowners through the warranty process with the manufacturer.  Roof Time understands the warranty rules and regulations and whether or not a warranty claim is valid or could be filed.

It can be very upsetting and frustrating for a homeowner to discover they have defective shingles installed on their home.  Part resolution is Roof Time, Inc. sells and installs only limited lifetime shingles.  Limited lifetime shingles include manufactures guaranteeing all materials and labor for up to 50 years!  Also, installing a new roof can sometimes save homeowners 5-30% savings on their homeowners insurance.  In some cases, we’ve had homeowners make up the lost amount of labor due to their defective shingles with those savings alone.
